Working in Canada and want a short course? You no longer need a study permit

What changed
The general rule has always allowed courses of six months or less without a permit, but with fine print: the course had to end within the period of stay authorized when you entered Canada, under paragraph 188(1)(c) of the IRPR. It worked for recent arrivals. Anyone who had spent years in the country and renewed their permit from inside was left out, and a four month course meant a full study permit application.
The new policy removes that condition. A valid work permit and a course of six months or less: that is all. It does not matter how many extensions you have stacked up since you entered.
When it applies and when it does not, with examples
It applies. You arrived in 2023 with a work permit, renewed it in 2025 and it is valid until 2027. You want to take a five month English course. You can enrol now, with no application to IRCC. If the school asks for proof, your valid work permit is the proof.
It does not apply. Your work permit expired last month. You applied for renewal on time and can keep working while you wait, but this policy does not cover your studies: the exemption ends when the permit expires. For that same English course you need a study permit, or to wait for your renewal to be approved, because once the new permit is in hand you are covered again.
It does not apply either. The course runs eight months. The six month limit has no exception: longer program, study permit.
The fine print that matters: full-time study
If you study full-time under this policy, any work experience you gain during your studies does not count toward Canadian Experience Class eligibility or toward Canadian work experience points under the CRS in Express Entry. If you are building your year of experience for permanent residence, a part-time course protects that clock. The choice of format is an immigration decision, not an academic one.
What to watch now
Three questions before you enrol: how long the program runs, when your work permit expires, and whether full-time study costs you experience you will need. The window is open until the end of 2027, but IRCC can close it earlier without notice.
